U. S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are mixed, for week ending May 11, reports AAR

United States rail carload and intermodal volumes, for the week ending May 11 were mixed, according to data issued this week by the American Association of Railroads (AAR).

 

Rail carloads, at 209,319, fell 7.0% annually, trailing the weeks ending May 4 and April 27, at 213,410, and 214,414, respectively.

 

AAR reported that six of the 10 carload commodity groups it tracks posted annual gains, including: chemicals, up 1,668 carloads, to 33,045; petroleum and petroleum products, up 1,505 carloads, to 10,996; and miscellaneous carloads, up 1,132 carloads, to 8,639. Commodity groups posting decreases included coal, down 16,549 carloads, to 46,715; nonmetallic minerals, down 2,291 carloads, to 31,457; and grain, down 1,610 carloads, to 17,226.

 

Intermodal containers and trailers, at 254,429 units, rose 7.7% annually, topping the week ending May 4, at 249,696, and trailing the week ending April 27, at 261,888.

 

Through the first 19 weeks of 2024, U.S rail carloads, at 4,045,438, are off 4.9% annually, and intermodal units, at 4,796,341, are up 8.7% annually.
