Inspectie neemt in zeven weken 16.500 Chinese fatbikes in beslag

Yesterday, a number of Dutch media broke the news that in the past few weeks, as many as 16,500 electric bicycles imported from China were seized in the port of Rotterdam and logistics warehouses in a special crackdown by Dutch authorities. It is reported that the seizure action by the Netherlands Environment and Transport Inspection Bureau (ILT) is responsible for the special action to focus on cracking down on Chinese-made, can reach higher speed fat tire electric bicycle (English name FATBIKE, also translated as fat car, four seasons car, snowmobile, ATV).

It is understood that the operation began in July this year, the 16,500 confiscated electric bicycles with fat tires were made by several Chinese manufacturers, and most were found in the operation in the port of Rotterdam.

In addition, the Dutch Environmental and Transport Inspection Authority (ILT) also seized 1,000 unapproved electric bicycles with fat tires from the warehouse of a Dutch distributor.

The Dutch Environmental and Transport Inspectorate (ILT) said it would hand over all documents to local prosecutors, which could mean that producers and sellers could not only be fined, but also prosecuted. According to ILT, these fat-tire e-bikes are "unapproved mopeds" that look like bikes, but go too fast.

According to the Dutch Environmental and Transport Inspection Authority (ILT), these fatbikes often already have powerful engines and other technical features that make the bike effectively a moped. Therefore, they are not allowed to be sold in the Netherlands.

"An unapproved e-bike with a fat tire does not suddenly meet the legal requirements for an e-bike with a simple button or software update," the Dutch Environmental and Transport Inspection Authority (ILT) said.

"Fat tires that go too fast often already have an engine that's too powerful, and these cars have all the other technical features of mopeds.
