One cargo ship ran aground in the Suez Canal

A cargo ship carrying Ukrainian grain ran aground in Egypt's Suez Canal on Jan. 9, the Suez Canal Authority said, temporarily disrupting traffic in a waterway vital to global trade. The administration said the ship, M/V Glory, ran aground due to a "sudden technical failure." The ship has been refloated and taken away by tugboats for repairs, and traffic in the canal has not been affected by the grounding, said Usama Rabeeah, chairman of the canal authority.

Fortunately, the situation was not serious and it only took the authority a few hours to free the ship. Leth Agencies, a Suez Canal shipping service provider, said the ship ran aground near the city of Cantala in Ismailia province along the Suez Canal. Twenty-one southbound ships will resume passing through the canal, with minor delays expected.

There is no official word on the cause of the stranding, but it is likely to be weather-related. Including the northern provinces, Egypt has experienced a wave of bad weather in recent days, mainly strong winds. Leth Agencies later released an image indicating that the M/V Glory had run aground on the west bank of the canal, with its bow facing south, and that the impact on the canal was not serious.

According to VesselFinder and MarineTraffic, the ship was a Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. The 225-meter-long M/V Glory, carrying more than 65,000 tons of corn, left Ukraine for China on December 25, according to data registered by the Joint Coordination Centre (JCC), which monitors the implementation of Ukraine's grain export agreements.
